On Track - Feb. 20th

The season officially kicks off this weekend in California.

I say that because we know drivers can win the Daytona 500 and at restrictor plate tracks and not win the championship in the same year; but drivers have to be good on the 1 1/2 & 2 mile tracks that currently dominate the cup schedule and greatly influence who will the championship at the end of the season.

NASCAR's at the Auto Club Speedway of Southern California this weekend.

1st time Daytona 500 winner Matt Kenseth has led in 10 of his 14 races there with a series high 10 top 10 finishes plus 6 top 5 finishes and 2 wins - back to back in 2006 & 2007. Teammate Carl Edwards is the defending race winner. He has 1 win and 8 top 10 finishes in just 9 races @ ACS under his belt. Roush Fenway Drivers have won the past 4 February races.

Jack Roush has 6 car owner victories - 2nd only to Rick Hendrick's 7.
Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson lead all drivers with 3 wins and 8 top 10 finishes at the track. Johnson also won the last series race back in August - on his way to his 3rd championship.

There's been speculation that with the economy it could be hard to fill a 43 car field but 48 cars are vying for a qualifying spot today.
